A man spotted at Kingston station and in the Rotunda with a knife has been arrested by police.

On Wednesday 18 August, Kingston police detained a suspect in the Rotunda after he was seen running away from officers.

The force then carried out a sweep using stop and search powers.

They found a knife with an 8cm blade under a nearby arcade machine and arrested the man for possession of an offensive weapon.

A member of the public had earlier alerted police to the man after seeing him at Kingston station with the knife.

In a statement released yesterday (19 August), Kingston police said: "Yesterday police were called by a member of public who had seen a male near Kingston Train station with a knife.

"Officers have raced to the area to find the male, and have seen a male running from police into the Rotunda opposite the station.

"PCs have met a male matching the description inside, and have detained the male under section 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence act for the purpose of a search - a stop and search.

"Officers have found the pictured knife stashed under an arcade machine nearby.

"The male was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and taken to a police station."
