Kingston upon Thames is set to get 100 new council houses in the latest housing development to be given the green light by Kingston Council.

The social housing will be built on four sites across the borough including York Way in Chessington where work has already started.

Mixed-tenure developer Countryside has been awarded the design and build contract for the project.

The Council also putting more than £10m of grant funding from the Mayor's Building Council Homes for Londoners programme into the project.

They say that safety, sustainability and high quality architecture have been central to the design process and a number of the homes will be fully accessible to wheelchair users.

Cllr Emily Davey, Portfolio Holder for Housing at Kingston Council, said: "We are excited to be working with Countryside to bring a new breed of much needed council homes into the borough.

"All of the homes are being built on under-utilised sites, and will have sustainability at their core - reducing CO2 emissions, improving local biodiversity and allowing tenants to live more sustainably.

"I can't wait to see Countryside bring these plans into reality."

Countryside are currently overseeing the regeneration of the Cambridge Road Estate in Norbiton.

The regeneration project costs £880 million and will see the estate's 832 homes demolished to make way for 2,170 new ones.

Residents of the estate voted in favour of the regeneration last year and will move into temporary accommodation as it takes place.

The new plans include more green space, improved cycle parking facilities and better facilities for residents.

However, there was concern over an overshadowing report which showed that the new homes in the estate will lose light earlier than the current ones, due to the height of the buildings.

The Cambridge Road Estate plans have just undergone a re-consultation and are awaiting a decision by Kingston Council's planning authority.
