It's snow joke: Surbiton's Ski Sunday & King's Soup Celebration returns this weekend!

Crowds are expected to line part of St Mark's Hill, Surbiton, this Sunday (16th), to cheer on local thrill-seekers as they attempt to "ski" along part of Central Parade with blocks of ice strapped to their feet.

This unique spectacle is part of the town's annual Ski Sunday event which makes its long-awaited return after a break of more than five years.

The fun and free competition, which runs from 11am to 1pm, is organised by The Community Brain, a local not-for-profit based at Tolworth Railway Station, that uses the widest range of the arts, local history, social enterprise and community-led regeneration to give communities a voice and a renewed sense of importance and pride.

As part of the volunteer-led Ski Sunday event, the pavement in front of the shops in Central Parade -- just a stone's throw from Surbiton Railway Station – will be transformed into a ski slope using a long piece of super-slippery lino.

Then throughout the morning, daredevil competitors – individuals or teams and many in costume – will showcase their sporting prowess and gravity-defying deftness, as they attempt to "ski" their way downhill to the roar of the crowd.

"If you thought skiing was reserved for the wealthy in places like Chamonix or Val d'Isère then think again," explains Robin Hutchinson MBE, founder and director of The Community Brain.

"With Surbiton's Ski Sunday we're democratising skiing while showing how with a little imagination and community help, anywhere can become a playground.

"This year's Ski Sunday is extra special because, due to poor weather in 2017 and 2018, then COVID, this will be the first one for around five years!"

The King's Soup Celebrations

Later into Sunday afternoon, there's a change of pace as the focus moves to Surbiton's Claremont Gardens, near Waitrose, for The King's Soup celebration (nothing to do with King Charles III, for those wondering).

Inspired by local folklore about a selfish king who changes his bad ways after tasting a soup made by a collective of villagers, this open event celebrates togetherness and community.

Come along between 1.30pm and 4.30pm to help make a soup "fit for a king". Simply, bring a leek and potato to contribute, if you can, and a vessel to enjoy your soup from.

Alternatively, just come and enjoy some time with friends and neighbours, along with free live music and entertainment. There will also be a charity bar and plenty of soup, of course.

How to enter Ski Sunday

If you fancy giving the slops a shot, Surbiton Ski Sunday is a free event that's open to everyone and you can sign up on the day. Some safety equipment will be provided, but if you have your own, please bring it with you – along with a costume of your choice!
