Family-run pizza van seeks permission to keep trading outside church in Kingston

A family-run pizza van stationed in Kingston has applied to the council to extend its street trading licence.
Vesuvio on the Road, which trades outside Saint Pius Church on Orme Road, is hoping to renew its trading licence for another year.
The van, which operates at the above location from 5pm – 10pm Wednesday to Sunday, sells woodfired Neapolitan pizza, soft drinks, and desserts, and was awarded a Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety for Catering certificate last year.
Vesuvio on the road won its battle to renew its 2026 trading licence back in January, after concerns were raised its location was "disrespectful".
At the time, objectors argued it was unsuitable to park a pizza van across two parking bays outside the church, at a licensing hearing on Tuesday, January 27. The plans, which were only for the evenings, received 22 written objections from residents.
Richard Smith, representing members of the church, including Father Alfred Ebalu, said they did not want to stop the business trading and were only concerned about the location of the van and the disturbance this caused.
He said: "The church building and its immediate surroundings provide an area of peace and calm appropriate to the long-established traditions of a place of worship.
"Trading from a pizza van at the gates of the church in such a location is demonstrably unsuitable – even, some say, disrespectful."
Residents have until 29 October to submit representations for this year's license renewal application and can do so here.
