Cold weather alert issued in Kingston until Friday

By Eli Haidari 18th Jan 2023

The deep freeze that has swept across the Kingston borough has led to the Met Office issuing a Level 3 Cold Weather Alert.

There is a 90% probability of severe cold and icy conditions through until 9am on Friday, including the whole of London.

Very cold nights are expected, with potentially severe widespread frosts, while daytime temperatures are expected to sit near to or just above freezing.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: "Cold weather can have a serious impact on health, particularly older people and those with pre-existing health conditions, as it increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections.

"During this period, it is important to check in on family, friends and relatives who may be more vulnerable to the cold weather. If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over the age of 65, it is important to try and heat your home to at least 18 degrees if you can."

Kingston Council has issued a series of public health pointers which includes heating your living room during the day and your bedroom just before you go to sleep if you are unable to heat all rooms throughout your homes.

If you have an electric blanket, use it as instructed. Never use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket.

Do not use a gas cooker or oven to heat your home; it is inefficient and there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The council has partnered with local voluntary and community organisations across the borough to provide 'Warm Spaces' in a bid to support residents dealing with the current cost of living crisis which includes soaring energy bills.
