Transport for London (TfL) has said that repair work on the A3 between New Malden and Tolworth should now be finished by 24 July - two days later than the original expected completion date.

One lane has been closed southbound since the end of May following an accident at Tolworth Roundabout.

The entry slip road to the southbound A3 has also been closed at Tolworth.

Additionally, questions have been raised about the time it is taking to fix the barrier and the length of the closure, which stretches back to South Lane in New Malden.

A TfL spokesperson said: "Previoulsy, unfortunately, a serious collision involving multiple vehicles – which is currently the subject of a Metropolitan Police investigation – caused extensive damage to the highway at this location which now requires repair.

"An emergency lane closure is required for the safety of all users of this location including the protection of residents and property on Hook Rise South.

"Senior structural engineers from our Engineering team have advised that the emergency lane closure southbound and a slip road closure – as well as the installation of a temporary restraint barrier system – are essential to ensure that the road remains safe for people to use while the repair work is carried out.

"We are seeking to expedite the fabrication of the specific materials required to repair this structure and are in daily correspondence with our supply chain to enable the repairs to happen as soon as possible."

The spokesperson added: "As soon as fabrication is complete, the repair will follow without delay. Additional signage is now in place and the expected completion date is 24th of July 2026.

"We apologise for the disruption caused and hope the above information explains the need for the current lane closures."
