You may have noticed some unusual road signage up around Kingston over the past month and wondered who put them there.

Well, this is all down to artist and self-proclaimed "jack of all trades" Kim Noble.

Earlier this month, Noble repurposed a couple of disused road signs near Richmond Road into art, decorating them with messages that are personal to him, such as "Your email has really p***** me off' and "I'll be waiting for you over there my love".

Speaking about why he began this artistic venture, Noble told Kingston Nub News: "I saw an empty road sign years ago and thought how sad and impotent it looked.

"So, I thought I'm going to give it its job back, but I thought I'd make my own version of a sign rather than the bog standard one.

"With my work generally, I try and put it out in front of people in everyday life rather than in galleries. It's part of a bigger element of my work that I do."

Noble said that he likes "taking people by surprise" with his work and "jolting people out of their daily routine with things they're not used to seeing".

He said: "Maybe most people won't see it and most people will pass, but some people might see it and it might stop them in their tracks for a second.

"We're so bombarded with signs selling us stuff or telling us what to do or what we can't do. So, I thought I'd do something that's slightly different."

Speaking about the meaning behind the messages on the signs, Noble said: "With the signs in Kingston, I've tried to go quite personal with them. So, they're kind of personal things that you wouldn't expect to see made in such a permanent way.

"The phrases are like throwaways or quite sad or quite deep.

"Seeing those private messages out there in the public is almost like you're spying on someone's private WhatsApp message or a private conversation between two people. But then I've made it permanent."

The two signs mentioned in this article have now been taken down, but Noble will be putting more up later next month.
