Last Saturday (6 June), Kingston School of Art (KSA) opened its doors for its annual Degree Show at Knights Park campus, transforming studios, workshops and gallery spaces into a showcase of emerging creative practice.

This week-long show represents the work of KSA students from various programmes, including:

  • Architecture & Landscape
  • Illustration Animation
  • Graphic Design
  • Filmmaking
  • Product & Furniture Design
  • Fine Art
  • Photography
  • Interior Design
  • Fashion
  • Fashion Promotion & Communication

The work exhibited at the show demonstrates skill at an extraordinary level and a strong commitment to each tiny detail.

I was immensely impressed at how students could produce such a high level of work.

Speaking about her work, Product & Furniture Design student, Amelia, told Nub News: "I've made the draped side table as my final major project, and it's kind of like introducing a new material for Ercol's furniture line, which is very much traditional.

But the ceramics bring something new yet familiar to people because it's shaped into a white tablecloth.

"It's quite easy to clean the surface rather than if it was just a wooden tabletop and it's just showing something new to a user."

Fellow Product & Furniture Design student Kasper added: "I produced some cast aluminium coat hooks, door handles, and candlestick holders.

"I designed my own aluminium sandcasting process, where I pack sound over plates, and then poke sharpen dowels through the sand to create craters, which acts as the runners and rises for the aluminium to flow, but also as the coat hooks bases for the candles that holds and handles that you can hold."

Meanwhile, Illustration Animation student Renee created an animation based on her mum's journey from Uganda to England for the show.

She said: "And on my table [pictured below], I have a bunch of still images from my animation, including some graphite drawings and some soft pastel behind the scenes."

Fellow Ilustration Animation student Maya created a mixed media film for the show.

She told Nub News: "I kind of created some like tin embossing and a bit of prints and merged this and made it into a film.

The film is based on a narration of my mum talking about her father and growing up in the pub environment. So I've also created some screen printed pub coasters to go along with my film.

"I was going back and forth to Wales a lot, which is where I am from, and to this local pub that my grandfather used to go to, and I was allowed access on Mondays when it was closed to gather as much research and anything that I could use in my film."

KSA's annual Degree Show finishes tomorrow (Friday, 12 June) and is open to the public.
