A new vegan market, believed to be the first of its kind held in Kingston borough, took place in Old London Road yesterday.
The Halloween-themed vegan market the street known for its quirky and independent charm close to traffic as traders set up stalls selling locally made, sustainable and ethical produce.
For all the traders interviewed by Nub News, it was their first time selling their vegan goods at a market in the town - though most of them live nearby in areas such as Putney, Hersham, and Walton-on-Thames.
Despite the morning's rain the stallholders were in a sunny mood and much of this was thanks to the warm welcome they had received from Kingston shoppers.
Owner of 'Vegan Crazy', Cintia, told Nub News the rain and wind hadn't put people off browsing the market and it had been busy since opening time at 10.30am.
Neighbouring stall-holder, Marisa who runs 'Cakes Free From,' said it had been so busy she'd not had time to stop for lunch.
She described the customers as a mixture of ages, with people aged from 20 to 60 stopping by to sample her sweet treats.
Just as popular was Binary Beer, a botanical-infused brew which is billed as 'beer for wine-lovers.'
Looking after this stall was David from Woking, whose daughter Danielle, a chemical engineer, set the business up in 2018 after achieving her masters in brewing.
Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beers were available at the stall to try and David enthused about Danielle's success including bagging a World Beverage Innovation Award last year.
Nearby stall-holder Sophie's Delights also saw success at the market, selling out all but one flavour of her cheese made using nuts.
Sophie told Nub News she is looking forward to coming back to Kingston with the market and suggested another had been planned for next month.
Kingston vegan market is part of Ethical Vegan Events, a company founded by former local resident Louise Simpson.
Simpson, who was born in Kingston hospital, told the Kingston Courier she was "so excited" to be bringing the market to her birthplace.
"Our markets are about supporting small, independent businesses and encouraging people to shop local," she said.
"We love using the hashtag #notjustforvegans, because you don't have to be vegan to enjoy great food, shop ethically and consciously."
