Kingston residents are being urged to ditch their cars tomorrow (22 September) for World Car Free Day 2021.

Greener forms of transport including walking and cycling will be promoted during a range of events across the borough celebrating the annual car-free campaign.

Two roads in Kingston will close to traffic for part of the day to allow the events to take place.

North Parade in Chessington will shut from 10.15am - 12pm for a car-free celebration involving poetry readings and songs from children at Castle Hill primary school.

A section of Surbiton's King Charles Road from the cafe up to the junction with Alexandra Drive is also due to close between 11am and 5pm as residents are invited to explore the nearby parklet.

Kingston Council will also be putting on a range of events to celebrate the day.

This includes free bike check-ups and e-bicycle testing outside the Guildhall, available between 12pm and 5.30pm.

A new 1.2k cycle route connecting New Malden and Raynes Park stations will also be officially given its name 'Beeline Way' which was chosen by a public vote earlier this year.

The naming ceremony will take place at Coombe Road, next to New Malden station, with a speech from Kingston's Mayor at 11am.

Members of the public can also go on a guided nature walk led by the Council's Biodiversity Officer Elliott Newton.

The two walks will take place at Fishponds at 10am and Elmbridge Meadows at 4pm, and last from 30 minutes to an hour.

Kingston Cycling Campaign will be leading a bike ride from Kingston market to Epsom, also for World Car Free Day.

The route includes a short one-hour stretch from Chessington North to the town centre that cyclists can sign up for separately.
