Kingston and Surbiton MP Ed Davey is calling for an independent body to oversee the government's ministerial code, following a row over text messages between current Chancellor Rishi Sunak and ex-PM David Cameron.

Speaking on the Andrew Marr show this morning, Davey, also the leader of the Liberal Democrat party, said it is wrong that decision-making on the code should fall to the Prime Minister.

He expressed his concerns that the code is not being properly enforced in its current form and called for an independent body to oversee the code.

He also suggested the withholding of ministerial pay as a punishment for breaking the code.

"That would be a sort of penalty that I think the public would like and it would rebuild trust in British politics" he said.

During the interview with Marr, Davey defended his party's stance on vaccine passports and said he thought the Liberal Democrats would have "a good night" in the upcoming local elections.
